It is quite natural, therefore, that his first contact with Zola should have provoked, on James’s part, a violent reaction. Nothing was more opposed to his own delicate sensibility than Zola’s directness, violence and aggressivity, nothing more opposed to his sense of the relative and of individual freedom than the rigour of Zola’s method and his strict obedience to a system.
